Parts of the Brain

Neurons

Neurons transmit nerve impulses in the brain. A human brain is made up of an estimated 15 - 33 billion of these nerve cells. Each neuron is connected by synapses to several thousand other neurons.

A neuron is comprised of three parts:

1. The soma (The cell body).
2. The axon, which carries signals from the soma to the presynaptic ending.
3. The dendrites, which carry signals from the postsynaptic ending to the soma.
